Safely Boiling in a Test Tube

 
Heating liquids in test tubes requires caution.  Quick vigorous boiling should be avoided to prevent your solutiong from spilling out of the tube.  Do not fill test tubes past 20% of their capcity when you are heating them.  When boiling liquids in test tubes, hold the test tube at an angle, as shown, and point it away from yourself and other people. Keep the flame near the top of the water, and keep the liquid moving in and out of the flame. Never look into the mouth of a test tube you are heating.

Heating test tubes verticaly, like this can cause the water to boil vigorously and splash out of the tube.  Hold test tubes diagonally and heat the top of the liquid.
